I like reading Manga and graphic novels. The visual storytelling format offers some unique ways for telling a story, mixing art that conveys action with dialogue (spoken and internal) and narration. Though I have always enjoyed superhero comics, Manga, Manhwa and Manhua offer a much more varied storytelling experience because the writers and artists dare to move past the pulp adventure of yesteryear and the superhero genre now so common in the West.
I recall as a kid, reading the growing collection of Lee Falk’s Phantom comics that my older brother was accumulating over time. I also loved Thor, Superman, Ghost Rider and Werewolf by Night. My mother also collected some romance comic omnibuses from second-hand bookstores as well as some war and horror short story comic compilations, the latter being where I was first introduced to Werewolf by Night. It turns out that WbN was purchased by Marvel Comics at some stage and even had periodic crossovers with characters such as Captain America.
My love of manga was a result of my love of some of the Japanese anime being brought into Australia during the 70’s and 80’s. I remember with fondness, sitting down to watch Star Blazers and Robotech. Yes, my introduction to the anime was through space opera. They were epic and action-packed. To say that it left a lasting impressed would be an understatement.
Given that I don’t read much in the way of superhero comics anymore, this blog will focus more on my manga reading. Perhaps I will start reading superhero comics again down the track but that would take up some of my manga-reading time. I needz my mangaz!
Note that the schedule below is not in order as I will probably move between manga series on occasion. I will be doing ten-chapter weekly reviews for ongoing series that I am following but these will not be linked on this page individually as I intended to post a review of the series at the end. In the Completed Manga Series Reviews section you will find links to reviews of completed longer-run series as well as reviews for shorter run manga that I occasionally read.
