Creative Prompts 2017-03-22

Hello again! As promised, I have another set of prompts based on a notable place in the USA. This time around, the theme is “Chicago”.
Chicago, also known as “the windy city”, is home to the Bears, the Bulls and the Cubs as well as a rock band that adopted the name of its beloved city back in the 70’s and well into the 80’s. The people of the city are passionate about sport, music and food such as the famous “Chicago deep dish pizza”.  The latter has been subject to certain levels of rivalry with New York’s own pizza, leading to numerous ad campaigns any time that sporting teams from either city are up against each other. It was also home to Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey for many years.
It is a place with its own share of issues throughout its long history. Corruption, crime and violence have marred many of the city’s great moments. Figures such as Chicago crime boss Al Capone, serial killer John Wayne Gacy and corrupt mayor Rob Bagojevich have placed a permanent mark on the city as have the numerous gangs. The people of the city endeavour to move forward in spite of these terrible moments.

That should give you plenty to look at and listen to. As always, if you find the prompts useful or have suggestions for future themes, feel free to drop me a line or leave a comment.

Creative Prompts 2017-03-21

I apologise for the late post for today’s creative prompts. I got a little distracted with some stuff yesterday and earlier today leading to me not getting this entry out on time. In any case, I am back with today’s prompts. As mentioned yesterday, this week is a series of prompts based on several notable areas and major cities in the USA.
In contrast to yesterday’s theme about Hollywood in Los Angeles, today’s theme is New York. Most of us have several images that immediately pop to mind when we hear that name. It is the rare person that doesn’t link terms such as “the city that never sleeps” or “the big Apple” with this ageing city. The MTV film Joe’s Apartment shares its own unique vision of the city via sentient talking cockroaches dealing with a newcomer to the city. And who isn’t familiar with the New York shown in shows such as Friends and Seinfeld?
Many of the depictions of New York in pop culture are somewhat negative, with images of crime such as muggings and corruption. We see the odd rivalry between people from NYC and folks from New Jersey, a place known for its own share of political corruption. Marvel Comics has its own superheroes protecting the city from crime in the form of characters such as Daredevil.
We also see something else as well, that glimmer of hope from immigrants as they sail into the harbour to see the Statue of Liberty after their long trip. An example of these immigrants is Nikola Tesla, who arrived in 1884. We see tenacity and hard work, as well as a resilience to deal with disasters such as the terrorist attacks in 2001. New York is an old city but it has a rich history that cannot be legitimately denied.

I hope that these prompts are helpful to you guys. If you found these prompts useful or have suggestions for future themes, feel free to drop me a line.

Creative Prompts 2017-03-20

It is the beginning of a new week. How was your weekend? How did you guys go with the prompts that I gave you on Friday? I hope that whatever you did over the weekend was productive and fun as opposed to crappy and smelling like ass.
The theme for today is “Hollywood”, the beginning of a week-long series of themes about American cities. That word conjures up numerous images and ideas. It is the home of American film, a contrast to Pinewood Studios in the UK. It is where the rich and famous often gather, where young performers make pilgrimages to every year in the hopes of making their dreams a reality. It is a place where many of those same dreams are dashed and careers drown in the sea of faces. It is the home of scandals and masks, where people hide their own nature in an effort to stay on the front page of gossip and entertainment rags. It is also a lie that offers some element of truth about human nature.

That should give you a bit to work with. Even if you don’t create something with these prompts, perhaps you will learn something about yourself or the world around you as a result. The themes for the rest of the week are already picked out, so be sure to check back regularly.

Creative Prompts 2017-03-17

Hey there, folks! It is Friday again and some of you will likely have some spare time to work on whatever takes your fancy. Maybe you have a craft or DIY project that you’ve been meaning to throw yourself into for a while now. For some of you, you will likely want to work on something creative and somewhat random.
So, what is the theme that I’ll be using for today’s group of prompts? It is “night“. This word conjures up so many different ideas. For some, it offers up the idea of restful slumber and dreams, contrasting with the ideas of nightmares and monsters. It is the mystery and the unknown and things people do in the night. It is sex and sensuality and physical shows of attraction to another human being or beings. That one word also conjures up the idea of an end to something, specifically the day, as it moves toward the beginning of another.

I hope that this gives you some ideas to develop over the weekend.

I apologise that I didn’t post any prompts yesterday. We had a storm in our area yesterday which led to a power outage. This also resulted in me not being able to get the weekly TV review out on time either.
So, what is the theme for today? Well, after some consideration I came up with the theme of “hello“. This word not only acts as a greeting but also manages to signal the beginning of something. It can also be used to signal surprise and to show condescension towards somebody else. It is a rather dynamic word.

Best of luck with creating something worthy with the prompts that I have given you.

*waves* Hello again! I have some new prompts for you guys. This time around, the theme is “one”. Yes, it is mildly amusing given that I will be offering pairs of prompts in each section. Such is the odd nature of that word. “One” often has this tendency of meaning groups of something in particular. e.g. one pair, one dozen eggs, one family, one nation, one belief system, etc…

Best of luck with today’s prompts!

It is the beginning of another week. I hope that you all had an enjoyable and productive weekend. And for those that didn’t, remember that you are at the beginning of a new week.
With this in mind, today’s theme is “travel”. Sometimes travel is spatial and sometimes it is temporal. What is evident is that we move from one point to another but do not always perceive the changes that occur in between those points.

  • Text prompts: “The real voyage of discovery consists of not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Marcel Proust quote + “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” T. S. Eliot quote, courtesy of BrainyQuote
  • Audio prompts: Manner of Travelling by Hot Fiction from Apply Within + Seven Hours by Michael Ellis from A Million Ways To Waste A Summer

I hope that these prompts will help get the cogs turning.
