Keiko’s Video of the Week #001

Beginning from today, I will be sharing a neat youtube video each Thursday. This will range from odd contraptions to techniques for making things, feats of prowess to mastery of something that would otherwise be overlooked. That means that I will be steering clear of posting the classic “viral” video such as the one of the bird dropping a snake at a barbeque as it doesn’t fit into the parameters of learning new things or seeing mastery in action. You are likely to see an abundance of the viral videos shared on the internet, but not the latter as most people simply wish to be entertained rather than learn things. This isn’t a bad thing, just not the goal of this new segment. If you have a video that you’d like to put up for consideration, feel free to post in the comments section or shoot me a message.

For the first instalment, I am posting this video of a Chinese forging technique using a big ass hammer. I am posting the clip because of how odd and simple the technique is, yet extremely effective in manufacturing the end product. It is also extremely dangerous work given the super hot metal being shaped by the process. As you might notice as well, the workers do not wear hearing protection, which is likely to lead to hearing loss for those involved later on down the track.

You can also find a bunch of other neat videos of kick-ass machinery and production techniques via the Extreme Machines Magazine youtube channel.
