MOOC Review: Food, Nutrition and Your Health

Provider: Open 2 Study (Australia) [course page]
Lecturer: Dr. Nicholas Vardaxis
Subject: Psychology / Biology
Delivery: Intake-based asynchronous study
Completion Date: 08/28/2013 (4 modules over 4 weeks)

Description: Dr. Nicholas Vardaxis discusses the numerous things to consider when considering a healthy diet, starting with the basics of physiology and the various nutrients, before moving onto subjects such as health conditions (allergies and intolerance), eating disorders and the various popular diets.

Strengths: Dr. Vardaxis lays the groundwork by giving the viewer a refresher in the anatomy of the Gastrointestinal System as a means to help the viewer understand the impact that eating certain foods and intake levels has on overall health. Adding in the component of eating disorders adds a rather unique perspective as well, something that folks that run nutrition courses often overlook. There is some rather solid logic behind these additional topics, especially given the mortality rates each year due to eating disorders.
Weaknesses: Though he is a rather personable chap, Dr. Vardaxis does repeat some things on occasion. Not that big a deal given the quality of the material covered though.

Conclusion: If you are looking for a course on nutrition, then I highly recommend this course. There is plenty of information covered, and Dr. Vardaxis’ manner made the material more accessible for me as I went through the videos. Having finished the Coursera offering “Nutrition and Physical Activity for Health”, I can say that I enjoyed Dr. Nick’s offering more. It just seemed a lot more personable for me.
